MATCH PREVIEW

Here you will find a preview of Tottenham Hotspur's next competitive fixture. .

Spurs vs Everton 26/08/06

Spurs welcome The Toffees to The Lane on saturday knowing that a victory will see us in much the same position as last season after two games. The Blues managed an opening day victory over newly promoted Watford at Goodison last week, then followed that up with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers. Both decent results, and a far better start for them after last seasons early woes.

With new signing Andy Johnson likely to partner James Beattie up front they look like they might be a little more potent than last time out. Towards the end of last term Beattie seemed to work an understanding with Scottish International James McFadden, who incidentally was the last Everton player to score at WHL, in Spurs 5-2 win in January 2005. Now however McFadden will have to be content with splinters again as boss Davie Moyes looks to achieve a top six finish with his new strikeforce.

As for Spurs, we got our season back on track on tuesday night, and although i saw only brief highlights, it appears we played some really nice stuff against the Blades. Hopefully the players can carry that form onto the pitch come 3pm on saturday.

Dimitar Berbatov, of course, got his WHL debut off to a flier against Neil Warnocks men, and his performance, along with that of Robbie Keane was very encouraging. Jenas also got his self on the scoresheet, and after a poor performance from him at Bolton, that goal will surely be a confidence booster for the young midfielder.

I see this being a fairly tight encounter, with The Toffees proving difficult to break down. Over the piece, we should have enough quality to see us through though, and im going to predict a 2-0 win for Spurs with Keane and Lennon scoring.

Spurs v Sheffield United 22/08/06

On tuesday Spurs welcome Neil Warnock and his Sheffield United side to the Lane for their first Premiership meeting in over 12 years. The Blades started the season on saturday with a decent 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane against Liverpool, with new signing Rob Hulse grabbing the Premierships first goal of the season in the early kick - off. Only a 70th minute Robbie Fowler penalty stopped all 3 points staying in the steel city.

Spurs, on the other hand, had the dissapointment of the opening day loss at Bolton and will be looking to kick start their season with a home win over one of the sides regarded as relegation candidates. However, i believe different, and fancy the Blades to avoid the drop and begin to re-establish themselves in the top flight after their long absence from the elite. They have a decent squad of players, with guys like Phil Jagielka and Paddy Kenny particularly important to them. In Neil Warnock they have a manager who appears totally committed to the cause, and he is not frightened to tell it like it is.

It is a little difficult to pinpoint exactly what what wrong at The Reebok on saturday but it could be that just simply too many players were having an off day. It could also be argued that going down 2-0 to the Wanderers within 13 minutes is something that you aint ever going to come back from, supposing you played through the night. Whatever the reasons, it is obvious that things will have to change a little in order to take the scalp of the men from Bramall Lane.

Robbie Keane, who looked ok when coming off the bench, will hope to start, with Defoe, who was innefectual at Bolton, perhaps dropping to the bench. Dimitar Berbatov showed some nice touches in the opening loss, and hopefully he will mark his competetive debut at The Lane with a goal or two.

Another player who i feel let down the side at The Reebok was Edgar Davids, and perhaps a little bench time would do him good. So come tuesday evening i would fully expect us to have three points in the bag, although i think it will be a tough game, finishing, i predict 2-1 to Spurs.

Bolton Wanderers v Spurs - 19/08/06

Spurs travel to The Reebok Stadium on opening day, and will be hoping to put to bed a rather poor record in that part of Lancashire to bed. Last season the trip there was for a monday night game in early winter, and despite a perfectly good Jermain Defoe goal being chalked off, Wanderers won 1-0 thanks to a Kevin Nolan strike from around 20 yards.
One noticeable aspect of Boltons transfer dealings this summer have been the large number of outs, compared to those coming in. Add that to the loss through injury of Nolan, Gardner and Davies and they will be as weak as they have been for many a year.  Leaving them this summer is the likes of Fadiga, N'Gotty, Jaidi, Okocha and Perez and it looks like Mexican Jared Borgetti could be on his way also. Coming in are Quinton Fortune, Meite from Marseille and Tal from Maccabi Haifa.
That leaves Sam Allardyce with a much depleted squad and in truth there is probably not a better time to play them. Of course it would unwise to write them off, especially where Spurs are concerned and although i predict a 1-0 win for Spurs, it will be still be a hugely difficult game.
