Well
the 2005/06 season has started better than many of us would have
expected, looking back at pre-season there was some nice positives
inclucing the Peace Cup win in Korea and a good win over the previous
Champs of europe, Porto, at the Lane. The season proper began with a
good solid win at Pompey which was more through hard graft than
anything else, an own goal and Defoe secured the points at a rain
lashed Fratton Park. Next up was Boro at the Lane and they succumbed to
a 2-0 loss with Mido and Defoe on the scoresheet in front of yet
another full house.
The following Wednesday saw a re-jigged Spurs side play out a dire 0-0
draw with Blackburn at Ewood, a game we perhaps could have won if we
had played our full strength side. Next up was the visit of Chelsea and
although we played well the sending off of Mido for an elbow on Del
Horno did not help our 2-0 loss.September began with the visit of
Liverpool and in a decent game both sides might have won it ended 0-0.
A 1-1 draw at Villa Park followed with Keano cancelling out an
early Milner opener in a game that saw Defoe miss from the spot. Then a
trip to Grimsby followed - straight forward passage to the next rounf,
right? Wrong! a late goal was enough to see off a poor Spurs side that
did not deserve anything less.
Fulham were our next opponents and in a turgid game Defoes early
goal was enough to send mosr of WHL home happy. What followed next was
amazing - 2-0 down at the Valley to a Darren Bent double, Spurs looked
a beaten team until a fortunate Ledley King goal got us back on track.
Mido then got us level with a nutmeg from a tight angle before Subby
Robbie Keane finished the comeback with some applomb after good work
from Lennon and Defoe.
A 2-0 win over a poor Everton side was posted at the Lane with
headers from Jenas and Mido doing the damage. A week later and a trip
to Old Trafford and in the end a 1-1 draw was about right, with a
cracking Jenas free-kick cancelling out Silvestres early opener for
United.
Next up was the eagerly awaited North London derby and during a
great first half we might have gone 2 or 3 ahead but only a King header
seperated the sides. In the second period Arsenal turned the screw a
bit and in the end scored through Pires. We were dissapointed in the
end to say the least.
Monday 7/11/05 saw the trip to the Reebok and to say Bolton
deserved to win would be a lie. The goal from Kevin Nolan was a cracker
to be fair, but when Defoe had the ball in the net a minute or so later
it should have stood. While we did not play well, a draw at least would
have been right. Bring on The Hammers!
Well the Hammers came to WHL and snatched a late point through
Anton Ferdinand, with some truly awful defending to blame. Mido had
given us a 16th minute lead with a looping header over Shaka Hislop in
the West Ham goal. See Mido's goal here - http://egyptianplayers.com/multimedia/Mido-Westham100.mpg
Next up was the tricky trip to the JJB and although we never
outplayed Wigan we did enough to deserve all 3 points. Robbie Keane and
Edgar Davids were on the scoresheet for us while Lee McCulloch netted
The Latics late consolation.
A week later bottom dogs Sunderland visited the Lane and despite
a gutsy performance left empty handed as Mido, Keane and Carrick were
enough for us to win 3-2.
Nine days later Portsmouth visited the Lane in what was Harry
Redknapp's first game since his return to Fratton Park. An early opener
from LuaLua could not stop Spurs though a King, Mido from the spot and
Defoe sealed the points for us.
The following sunday we had the akward trip to the Riverside to
face a Boro' side very much blowing hot & cold. An entertaining 3-3
draw saw Keane, Jenas and Mido on the scoresheet for us with Jenas'
free-kick the pick of the bunch.
The boxing day match was Birmingham at the Lane and while the 2-0
result was perfect, the performance certainly was not. Keane scored
from the spot and Defoe grabbed a late clincher in a match which saw
Muzzy Izzet see red for diving.
Two days later at The Hawthorns a Kanu double gave West Brom a
deserved win over a Spurs side who looked half the team of some
previous matches.
Thankfully the New Years Eve visit of Newcastle to the Lane
proved more fruitful, with Tainio and Mido sealing the points in a game
we never looked like drawing never mind losing. We had the ball in thr
net a further 4 times, 3 through Keane, but they were rightfully judged
offside.
Onto The City of Manchester Stadium and an excellent 2-0 win
courtesy of Mido and Robbie Keane. Spurs were in complete control of
the game in a super team effort.
Next was the trip to Leicester in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup.
Despite goals from Jenas and Stalteri, incidentally a cracker, The
Foxes replied through Hammond, Hughes and De Vries to come back from 2
goals down and create another giant killing story.
The Saturday after saw us lose 1-0 at Liverpool with Harry Kewell on the score sheet for the Reds.
Following that a 0-0 draw with Villa at the Lane did little to
raise spirits, despite lots of the ball. Then an agonising late loss to
Fulham at Craven Cottage, with Carlos Bocanegra heading in the 90th
minute winner.
A 3-1 win over Charlton at the Lane followed, with Defoe grabbing
a double and Jenas the other, Jerome Thomas scoring the consolation for
The Addicks.
